Reus today is a well-situated town with prospects for growth and standards of living on a par with those in the rest of Catalonia. A positive position which we need to take advantage of to generate wealth: wealth for all.
Historically, the town of Reus has acted as a leading trading centre for an extensive region which has stretched far beyond the immediate Baix Camp area. The trade in produce based on the agricultural and food sector, in particular wine, olive oil and nuts, was from the 17th century onwards the driving force behind the economic activity which reached its peak in the 18th century in the spirit trade. Since the crisis in the textile industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Reus economy has seen a major shift towards the service sector.
This tertiary sector is today the most important, both as the main source of jobs and in terms of the creation of added value. It displays considerable drive, at the same time as a high degree of diversification.
Reus is known throughout Catalonia for its extensive range of shopping, largely concentrated in the historic town centre, with over 500 establishments which stand out for the quality of the products they sell and for the professional service provided by the shopkeepers.
