Its location between the major routes of the Mediterranean corridor and the Ebro axis, the potential of critical economic sectors such as industry and tourism and the existence of infrastructure facilities including the port and the airport, together with growing mobility between towns, make up the profile of a geographical area which is now Catalonia's second most important metropolitan region. A region with a personality of its own, with a long history of relationships and links and with a traditional role in a geographical area covering the whole of southern Catalonia.
