Reus is preparing to host a new edition of the Fira Trapezi, the Fira del Circ de Catalunya, which will once again fill streets, squares and theatres with a wide programme of contemporary circus. The festival, which will be held from 13 to 17 May, reaffirms its role as an essential meeting point for the sector and as a space for connection between artists, professionals and the public.

Trapezi commemorates its 30th anniversary by celebrating three decades of rigor and professionalization in Reus, capital of Baix Camp, with a city fully involved in the project. The Fair has consolidated itself as the main circus fair in the State and one of the reference events in southern Europe.

The poster for this 30th edition has been created by Reus professionals Sergi Herrera, visual artist, graphic designer and ephemeral architect, and Marc Díez, illustrator, designer and motion graphic artist.

"Trapezi is much more than a festival: it is a space for meeting and building the future for the circus. After four years of management, we see how the project has grown, opened up to Europe and consolidated a professional ecosystem where artists, programmers and institutions work together", explain Alba Sarraute and Cristina Cazorla, co-directors of the Trapezi Fair.

A diverse, contemporary and committed programming in this 30th edition

The new edition will present a diverse program that will include indoor, street, site-specific, circus with tent and cabaret formats, with proposals of different formats and origins -Catalan, national and international-.

The program, with more than 82 performances, 10 showcases and 60 companies, aims to reflect the vitality of contemporary circus and highlight its capacity for innovation and connection with society.

In this edition, the shows address relevant social issues such as motherhood, gender equality or other issues linked to contemporary reality, reinforcing the festival's commitment to critical thinking and social transformation.

Trapezi continues to work to project a current image of the circus, far from traditional imaginaries, and position it as a contemporary and diverse artistic discipline.

The opening of the Fair will take place on Wednesday, May 13, at 17 p.m., at the Cal Massó Art Center.

This year, the program will feature international headliners such as Collectif Malunés (Belgium) with Ki No Nagare” Cie Jessica Arpin (Switzerland) with Siku, La Triochka with Topdown or Compagnie Gaïus (France), with the show Pan!, who will bring a contemporary and innovative look to the current circus scene.

Regarding Catalan circus, the presence of consolidated companies such as EIA, PSIRC, Hotel Iocandi, or Toti Toronell stands out, as benchmarks in contemporary circus. Within the national scene, companies such as Cia Manolo Alcántara, Edu Manazas or La Troupe Malabó are emerging with proposals that combine technique, creativity and diverse scenic languages.

Committed to emergence and risk, Trapezi presents the first solo creations by Àlex Duran, Juan Carlos Panduro and Luichi Leal.

In addition, Trapezi participates of the II Promotion Plan for the circus of Catalonia 2023-2026, promoted by the Department of Culture and drawn up jointly with the main agents in the sector, which consists of fourteen measures that will be developed over the next 4 years.

A strategic project for the sector - Trapezi Pro Catalan Arts Conference

Beyond artistic programming, Trapezi reinforces its role as a professional market and networking space. Professional activities (Trapezi Pro Catalan Arts) become a key meeting point to generate alliances, share knowledge and promote new opportunities for the circus.

During May 13, 14 and 15, professionals from the sector will participate in meetings, thinking activities, showcases and networking spaces, consolidating the fair as a connection platform on a national and international scale.

The festival's management, which has been at the helm of the project for four years, highlights the evolution of Trapezi towards a more expansive and international model, with a growing presence of professionals from all over Europe and a clear commitment to strengthening the sector.

Some of the highlights include the international roundtable to discuss different financing models in the search for new challenges and the presentation of the state catalog of Circo a Escena.

A festival for all audiences

Trapezi is committed to expanding and diversifying audiences, breaking the traditional boundaries between segments and bringing the circus closer to spectators of all ages: young, family and adult.

With this aim, the festival combines accessible proposals with contemporary creations, reinforcing its role as an inclusive and transformative cultural event. We highlight some of the works such as “Entre bous i vaques”, by the French company La Côte Folle, Trash-Humante(s), by the Franco-Spanish company Sweet Chilli Circus, the inaugural show by the Catalan circus acrobatics leader, Circ Pistolet or Meraki, by the Aragonese company Edu Manazas.

Trapezi, head of measurement of Circus Municipalities

Over the next few years Trapezi is head of the Circus Municipalities measure, of the 2nd Circus Promotion Plan of Catalonia 2023-2026. This measure aims to raise awareness among those responsible for programming in various municipalities in Catalonia so that they increase circus programming within their stable programming or are able to generate new exhibition circuits.

This Plan consists of fourteen specific measures that aim to promote creation, production and exhibition, generate circuits and guarantee the presence of the circus in its diversity throughout the territory, strengthen companies in the sector, stimulate research and investigation and take advantage of the attraction and social, transformative, educational and communicative impact of the circus.

The II Circus Promotion Plan of Catalonia 2023 2026 is an initiative of the Department of Culture of the Generalitat of Catalonia and the Association of Circus Professionals of Catalonia (APCC) which has the collaboration of the Institut Ramon Llull, the Ateneu Popular 9 Barris, the Center for Circus Arts Rogelio Rivel, Encirca't, Eduxarxa, the Circus Training Association of Catalonia (AFOCC), Fira Trapezi - Reus City Council, La Central del Circ, the Mercat de les Flors and the complicity of various municipalities, entities and scenic facilities in Catalonia.
