R08: Did you know what?
The natural and cultural landscape of the excursion
The Picarany ravine, as well as the Almoster or the Quadra creeks, are listed as livestock roads, as they allowed the movement of livestock without affecting the agricultural estates, avoiding the eternal dispute between livestock farmers and farmers. At present, they continue to be communication routes not only for people to access the adjacent farms but also an important biological corridor for fauna, since the ravines often make it possible to save the fragmentation of the territory imposed by road infrastructures and railways Thus, it is not uncommon to see rabbits cross there or to find traces of the passage of foxes and badgers. The riverside vegetation hosts all kinds of fauna, where the beautiful nocturnal song of the nightingale or the more metallic song of the oriole, which is difficult to observe, stands out.
The Barran del Burgar, guarded by the imposing pine tree of the same name, forms, together with the Burgar farmhouse, a corner of special interest. In fact, Burgar was an independent district from the 1936th century until the middle of the XNUMXth century, when it was integrated into the district of Reus. The farmhouse, located in a central point, has its own chapel dating from the XNUMXth century dedicated to Our Lady of Hope, in use until XNUMX. It is currently in good condition, restored and used for tourism.
The natural environment of the ravines is combined with the landscape cultivated for centuries, with a predominance of olive, hazelnut and almond trees, accompanied by different hydraulic structures such as ditches and ponds that offer refuge to a greater number of fauna, such as amphibians, reptiles and insects . In fact, the name Cinc Ponts comes precisely from an aqueduct that had 5 arches and allowed the irrigation of the land located between Reus and Castellvell del Camp.
