The celebration of the Year of Fortune is part of the set of commemorations of the Generalitat de Catalunya for the year 2024 and is promoted by Reus City Council, through the Reus Municipal Institute of Culture, with the collaboration of the Department of Culture, the Provincial Council of Tarragona and the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC).

The commemoration, which takes place on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the death of the Reus painter Marià Fortuny i Marsal (1838 - 1874), will have Reus as the epicenter of the celebration with a program of conferences, cycles, round tables, exhibitions and other actions . In addition, there are also activities planned throughout Catalonia and other towns linked to Fortuny's professional life such as Madrid, Rome, Tetuan or Naples.

All the information is collected in the agenda of the commemorative website, which will be expanded throughout the year.

Among the scheduled activities, two exhibitions at the Reus Museum stand out: “Marià Fortuny. A biography on paper”, which can be visited between November 28, 2024 and February 8, 2025; and "Fortuny, the observation of nature", from September 18 to December 16, 2025. Other outstanding actions are the cycle of conferences "Fortuny: the sentimental geography of a painter", which will begin in December 2024 and will pass through several cities linked to the artist; the Paradigmes cycle, which began in September and lasts until December; and the Fortuny Days, which will take place in the photographic studio of Casa Amatller between November 20 and 22.

The MNAC has also planned a series of activities on the occasion of this commemoration. Precisely at the MNAC, the painter's most outstanding works in our territory are conserved, with an important collection of drawings and engravings.

Fortuny, a key figure
Marià Fortuny i Marsal (Reus, 1838 – Rome, 1874) is considered the best Catalan painter of the XNUMXth century and stands out for the great international projection that his work had in the period. Fortuny's contribution to the dignification of the practice of drawing and engraving should be highlighted, to the point that he is recognized as one of the most canonical authors of the discipline. His long stays in Rome and Paris provided him with a network of contacts that would promote his work everywhere.
