Municipal markets

The city has four municipal markets: three for retail and a fourth for wholesalers. The retail markets aim to adapt to a changing and dynamic demand, maintaining food products as a pole of attraction, with a complementary offer to that of the supermarkets, which are also located in the branches of two of the markets municipal These are the Central Market, located in the so-called eight commercial, and the Carrilet Market, located in the Carrilet neighborhood. In addition, every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday the Mercat dels Marchants takes place in the streets adjacent to the Central Market.
The Mercat del Camp is the market for wholesalers, a large-scale product supply center located next to infrastructures that ensure fast transport.
Central Market
The surface of the Central Market dedicated to sales is 3.915m2, but it has 443 more for the area of cold rooms and shared services. This centre, located in front of the old outbuildings of the Sant Joan hospital, offers service through 127 stalls of meat, fruit and vegetables or fish in a historic space. This shopping center dates from 1949.
Field Market
It was the first public market for the wholesale sale of fruit and vegetables in Reus, but it has become the large-scale supply and distribution center for agri-food products in Camp de Tarragona after the impetus given by the plan strategic of 2008. The construction of new facilities for trade, storage, handling and transformation of the products are added to the strategic location of the market: in the central area between Barcelona, Lleida and Valencia, next at the Port of Tarragona, at the Reus airport, at the high-speed station and connected to the AP-7 and the T-11. In addition, from the end of 2011, the farmers of the territory will have a new warehouse where they can directly sell their production.
Carrilet market
With the aim of providing service to the southeast area of the city, in 1983 the Mercat del Carrilet opened, with a 130-space underground car park. In 2.300 m2 of commercial space, 88 stalls supply a market with a thousand square meters of cold storage.
Market of Marchants
200 stallholders give life to the Marchants Market which unfolds around the Central Market on Mondays and Saturdays and the Carrilet Market on Wednesdays, thus creating synergies with the centers it surrounds. The activity of street vendors in 13.000m2, gives more life to the two nearby commercial areas.
The company Reus Mobilitat i Serveis SA, formerly known as Amersam, is the company with municipal capital in charge of managing and administering the Reus markets with the aim of achieving greater agility in the provision of municipal public services.

The Mercat Central de Reus dedicates nearly 4.000 m2 to the sale of fresh produce and to retail, spread over a hundred stalls occupied by more than 50 businesses. Two days a week it hosts the Marchants market, which unfolds around it on Mondays and Saturdays.
The grounds on which it stands were the seat of the Teatre Circ, a small summer theater surrounded by gardens that was inaugurated in 1901 by the recreational society El Círcol. The City Council acquired it in the 30s. XX and demolished it soon after with the aim of promoting the creation of a new, modern and hygienic market. The initial project, from 1934, was by the municipal architect Antoni Sardà, but although the works began, they were not completed in time. They resumed in 1944 and in 1948 the building was opened to host the II Exhibition Fair.
The following year it was inaugurated as a market and began to function bringing together all the activity that until then took place in Plaça del Mercadal, Plaça del Castell and the surrounding streets. There was a space intended for retail and another for wholesale, with places for wholesalers. The move of the wholesalers to the Mercat del Camp in 1987 brought about the modernization of the interior of the Central Market after almost 40 years, which was carried out without touching the monumental structure of the building.
