Public health, which is defined as the effort organized by society to prevent disease, protect, promote and restore health, and prolong people's lives, directs its actions beyond the increase of assistance services. Even more, if we take into account that almost 50% of the reasons why we get sick or die do not depend on health services, but on the set of personal, social and environmental factors in the place where we live.

Public Health of the Reus City Council works for:

• increase and improve actions aimed at the promotion and protection of health
• create spaces that allow adaptation to a model based on health determinants
• improve coordination with all the agents involved
• promote the empowerment of individuals and communities regarding their own health

HEALTH PROTECTION

The objective of the Health Protection service, of the Public Health department, is to manage the risk to health arising from the pollution of the environment, water for public consumption, public facilities and inhabited places, food products, tattooing, micropigmentation and piercing activities that may have an impact on people's health. 

In order to manage health risks, the Protection Service is organized in the following areas of work: 

• Food safety manages the risks arising from food products in order to guarantee the safety, wholesomeness and harmlessness of the food sold and/or prepared in the different retail establishments of the city. These retail establishments are: restaurants, bars - restaurants, prepared meals, butchers, bread and pastry shops and local production establishments.
• Environmental health: manages the risks produced by physical, chemical and biological agents. Monitoring and control of: drinking water, risk installations for legionella, of the public swimming pools.
• Activities of piercing and tattoo: in order to guarantee the safety of practices carried out in tattoo, micropigmentation and piercing establishments.

The City Council of Reus provides compliance with the health protection service through the competent delegated council in matters of Public Health, the collaboration with other administrations and the hiring of specialized companies where appropriate.

It also intervenes in cases of alerts, food poisoning and responds to complaints made by citizens, through a general application in the OAC, both of products and of food establishments in coordination with thePublic Health Agency of Catalonia.
