Trade and consumption

Commerce in the city has a long historical trajectory that begins at the beginning of the 14th century, when the Monday market began to be held. Later, in the 18th century, Reus would become the second most important city in Catalonia precisely thanks to trade, especially brandy. The prestige that trade gave to Reus led to the establishment of consulates of the United States, Holland, Prussia, England, Austria and Denmark, among others.
The city currently has a commercial attraction capacity of 660.000 inhabitants, and the Union of Shopkeepers of Reus, the first association of traders created in Catalonia, has more than 600 establishments. The bet is for an urban and quality trade, located in pedestrian areas which, added to the parking spaces available in the center or in nearby areas, give it a recognized attraction in Catalonia.
Commerce has also become one of the main attractions for tourists visiting the city of Reus. This has been facilitated by the alliance with the main tourist municipalities, the unification of the promotion policy of the city center as an area of commercial excellence and the fact that the Municipal Board of Tourism and Commerce brings together competences in tourism matters and commercial
The trade tradition is completed with the four municipal markets, one of which sells wholesale agri-food products, one of the specializations of the productive economy of the territory. In addition, the Reus Fair has contributed to making the city a hub for buying and selling.
Users have an office to turn to to solve problems arising from consumption. This is the Consumer Office of Reus and Baix Camp, which looks after consumer rights, access to information, mediation and prevention of conflicts arising from consumption.
