Reus saw the birth of an institution dedicated to people with mental illness at the beginning of the 20th century, which today manages the entire network of publicly owned devices in the territory under the name of Grup Pere Mata. The mental health network encompasses everything from the community network to the resources of hospitalization, emergencies and day centers, in addition to other specific and individualized services and programs.

The services that can be found in Reus in the field of mental health are these:

  • Adult Mental Health Center (CSMA)
  • Child and Youth Mental Health Centers (CSMIJ)
  • Individualized Services Plan (PSI)
  • Complete hospitalization
  • Partial hospitalization
  • Socio-health care
  • Eating Disorders Reference Unit (URTA)
  • Hospital Detoxification Unit (UHD)

The Pere Mata Institute is also a university center; its activity is closely related to teaching, training and also research.

In addition, the new Sant Joan hospital incorporates a Children's Psychiatric Internment Unit intended for the admission of children with mental disorders, to respond to the population of the demarcation.
