R05: Did you know what?
Barranc de Castellets and the meanders of the riera de la Quadra
The itinerary takes us through the green area of the Castellets ravine, which at this point is canalised. Beyond the motorway bridge we find it again following the natural course, describing some great meanders within a large flood plain. The old path from La Selva to Vila-seca, today quite blurred, or the path parallel to the Mediterranean corridor take us there. We will see some well-formed pine trees, which can be distinguished from afar.
These plains are ideal places to see birds of prey: kestrels, common buzzards and, from the months of good weather, the Marcen eagle. We can distinguish the kestrel by the way it hunts, staying suspended in the air by flapping its wings (it's called "flapping"). The position, neither too high nor too low, just enough to be able to see the prey and get down to it precisely.
Olive trees, almond trees, hazelnut trees, cereals, vines... and onions
Along the route we will find different crops, especially olive trees, almond trees, hazelnut trees, cereals and vines. The vineyard, on the edge of the Mas de Valls, and the olive trees, scattered throughout the territory, often flanked by a magnificent carob tree at one end of the estate.
The hazelnut trees are the star of Reus. Hazelnuts are the only product with the Reus Agrarian Denomination badge, although the low purchase price at origin and competition from other markets mean that more and more fields are being abandoned.
The view of the blossoming almond trees in front of the Pere Mata Institute is spectacular, and although our route does not pass through this point it is interesting to take it into account. On our way we will also find some beautiful flowery fields towards the end of January, especially in the north-west area of Reus.
The fields of a species of onions on the edge of Camí de la Selva, north of Reus, will also attract our attention, a crop not too common in our regions but which stands out for its landscape and chromatic values.

In Reus we can also find wholesale vegetable gardens, but during our itinerary we will only find small gardens for family supply.
It is common to see finches, herons, woodpeckers and puffins in the olive fields, and also thrushes, woodpeckers, bee-eaters in the summer, partridges...
